Chrysler, an American automobile brand, was founded in 1925 by Walter P. Chrysler. In 1928, Chrysler expanded its offerings with the purchase of Dodge and the introduction of the DeSoto and Plymouth brands. Chrysler found great success through the 1960s, but the 70s proved a difficult decade. Chrysler faced financial meltdown and was forced to petition the U.S. government for loan guarantees to save it from bankruptcy. The 80s ushered in the era of Lee Iacocca, the well-received K-Car, the minivan and the purchase of AMC which owned the Jeep moniker. In 1998, German-based Daimler-Benz, merged with Chrysler to form DaimlerChrysler. The partnership remained intact until 2007 when DaimlerChrysler sold approximately 80% of the Chrysler Group to an American private equity firm, with Daimler continuing to hold an approximate 20% stake.
